New Mentoring Programme Set to Strengthen Local Business
A new pilot mentorship programme led by the York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub will connect local mentors with small businesses to support their next stage of growth.
The Mentoring for Growth Programme is designed to support small businesses across York and North Yorkshire that are ready to grow, scale, and move confidently into their next stage. The pilot will match local business owners and leaders with mentors from outside their industry, helping them to develop the core, non-technical skills that underpin sustainable business growth.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:
“When you’re in business you know that you can learn a lot from others, but it’s difficult to find someone you can rely on for support as you develop new ideas.
“That is why we are launching this Mentoring for Growth programme, to create a place where our businesses can collaborate and grow together.
“This is a practical, community-led way to strengthen our economy and help York and North Yorkshire businesses thrive.”
The programme is set to strengthen the local economy by supporting business leaders through shared experience and practical guidance. Access to mentoring and external insight will help business owners navigate change, build resilience, and grow sustainably, contributing to long-term business stability and job retention across the region.
By encouraging the sharing of skills and experience within York and North Yorkshire, the programme supports collaboration rather than competition. This approach helps to keep expertise and opportunity within the region, fostering a more connected and supportive business community that can adapt and grow over time.

Harriet Stainton, Interim Delivery Manager for the York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub, said:
“This pilot mentoring programme marks an exciting step forward for York and North Yorkshire’s business community.
“By pairing emerging business leaders with seasoned growth experts, we’re building a stronger, more resilient ecosystem where ideas can flourish, and businesses can scale with confidence.”
The Mentoring for Growth Programme is seeking both mentors and mentees to take part. Applications are open to experienced business professionals who are interested in becoming mentors, as well as small business owners and individuals in leadership roles who would benefit from additional support and perspective.
Participants will benefit from a supportive environment where mentees can explore challenges with someone who understands the realities of running a business. Mentors will bring fresh thinking from outside the mentee’s sector, helping to develop new ideas, build confidence, and open doors to wider networks and opportunities.

Deadline for expression of interest is 4pm, Friday 20 February.

5.65 million still to file as the Self Assessment deadline looms
Customers can start their tax return, save it and re-visit it as many times as they need to before they submit it. And, once they’ve sent it, the bill doesn’t have to be paid straight away, but does need to be paid before the 31 January deadline. The easiest way to pay is through the HMRC app. Customers can also set up notifications in the app to ensure they know when payments are due so they don’t miss a deadline.
