York and North Yorkshire farms urged to apply for sustainability funding

Farms and businesses that have had an energy audit can now apply for funding up to £49,950 to help decarbonise their businesses.

York and North Yorkshire’s Business Sustainability Programme will help farms and businesses implement changes that have been recommended by the local authority or Grow Yorkshire decarbonisation support programme or one which has been done by a suitable private sector organisation.

The programme aims to support decarbonisation across the region and increase farm business resilience by cutting bottom lines, inspired by the work of North Yorkshire Council. Under the previous round of SPF funding, they helped business owners and farmers like Mark Dinsdale of Low Gill Farm. He received funding to install an anaerobic digestor and said that in just the first 10 days the adaptations had “dramatically reduced our reliance on the national grid, and we hope to be exporting green energy back to the grid very soon.”

He added, “This project will put us in a good position keeping us in dairying and going forward to achieve net zero.”

Not only will the programme led by the Combined Authority help the planet and business’, but it will also position York and North Yorkshire as a hub for ‘green business’, showing the benefits of decarbonising farms and businesses.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said, “Farmers across York and North Yorkshire are at the forefront of feeding the UK. We know they are facing enormous pressures right now and I’ve committed to making sure more farms are profitable to withstand those external pressures, such as climate change.

“That’s why we’ve made £1.9 million available through our Business Sustainability Programme. This will support farmers to cut their energy bills and emissions, all while contributing to our region’s ambition to become net zero by 2034 and the first carbon negative region in England by 2040.”

The Programme is open to applications from eligible farms but also wider businesses across York and North Yorkshire till Friday 19th September.

Applications can be made on our website here and are open to individual farms and businesses.
